CCI HISTORY

Caribbeana Communications Inc.began with one man’s vision and his three E's.
    Mid 1960s

The Chief Executive Manager
and primary owner, Vonulrick
Martin migrated to the United
States from Trinidad and
Tobago, in the mid-1960s, as
the American Civil Rights and
African American Revolution
was occurring.

       1969

In 1969 after bringing his wife
to the states he sought
employment, beyond the disc
jockeying work he was doing for
locals and friends, in the radio
industry of Washington D.C
Early 1970s

Owner, Mr. Martin
collaborated as a contributor to
WHUR’s Caribbean Experience
(Produced by Mr. John Blake).
1988
Production of the first annual and
consistent Caribbean Comedy
Festival occurred at Howard
University in Washington, DC.  The
concept originated with a fellow
Trinidadian colleague, Paul
Keens Douglas, who was the
producer of Talk Tents, in Trinidad
and Tobago, West Indies.
Caribbeana Comedy Festival, out
of his own pocket with the
assistance of volunteers from
Caribbeana and his family, in
which he would bring artists from
the Caribbean to the United States
to perform for fellow West Indians
and non-Caribbean individuals.
To this day this is the primary and
only financial sustaining venture
that maintains the vision of
“Caribbeana” and CCI.
1975
Mr. Martin moved on to
Pacifica’s 89.3 FM, WPFW
listener supported radio in
Washington, DC.  At this point
Mr. Martin considered this his
new beginning because this
was the inception of two
pinnacle moments, a) the
beginning of Vonulrick Martin’s
solo radio producing career on
his program “Caribbeana”
where he aimed to “educate,
entertain, and enlighten all
that is Caribbean” through
music and news production
and b) the new age radio where
the listener supported the radio
station.
1982
Mr. Martin organized a group of
essential individuals to form a
corporation named Third World
International Communications
Foundation, Inc.  At this point
in time he was resourceful
enough to have completed the
groundwork that included
numerous documentaries on
Carnival, the history of Pan, and
general history of the Caribbean
and Americas.   He attempted
to make it work with the Board
of Directors that were chosen.
    2005 to Present
After 31 years in which 27 of those were volunteered to “Caribbeana” and its following, plus the cause to sustain, create
awareness and celebrate the Caribbean culture every Saturday of each month  since 1978, Vonulrick Martin decided to
take his radio and news program to the next level.  In 2008 he renamed the company to Caribbeana Communications
and is in progress of incorporating the company as a nonprofit.

Although TWICF wasn’t able to physically materialize in the form of a fully operational entity, it left behind the
groundwork for CCI.  Mr. Martin wants his legacy to be left behind for others to become more  aware of the depth and
richness involved in the Caribbean through its music, news production, and so much more.  As he states, "its not about
me, its about our history. The more we know, acknowledge and understand our ancestors the farther we will be able to go
in this world".
